Geo Sea Hot Springs

Iceland seems like the land of hot springs, and that is because it genuinely is with all of the geothermal activity. From manmade pools to natural occurring hot springs, make the most of soaking in this incredible country!

In this blog you will see the top 6 hot springs in Iceland from our rating and understand the best practices and all you need to know before your visit.

Best Practices & Tips

Before and after soaking in the springs there are a few best practices to follow and tips that may help along the way!

  1. Remember, showering before the hot springs is required!
  2. You will want to shower after as well. 🙂
  3. Most of the paid hot springs provide showers, shampoo, soap, and conditioner!
  4. Make sure to drink LOTS of water before you soak so you do not dehydrate yourself!
  5. Bring a swimsuit you do not care about as some of the hot springs have mud that may stain.
  6. Be courteous to the locals (many locals soak here daily,) these pools are for relaxation and rejuvenation.
  7. There are some very strict rules to follow depending on the hot spring you visit! (For example, no running, do not climb on rocks, and so on…)
  8. When visiting Blue Lagoon, do not put your hair in the water and make sure to put conditioner in it while you soak so you do not ruin your hair.

1. GeoSea

This natural hot springs was our favorite because the views are absolutely incredible. It overlooks the ocean and mountains in the background. Not to mention it is usually less crowded as it is on the other side of the island in Húsavík.

We had an amazing time at the Geo Sea Thermal Baths. It was $86.16 total for two people. The baths overlook the ocean and mountains in the distance! In addition to the multiple baths there is a sauna room which feels incredible! They also have a bar with food and drinks, part of the bar is accessible outside where you can order drinks in the springs! Geo Sea provides showers, soap, shampoo and conditioner. We absolutely loved this experience and had a great booked through GetYourGuide for an easy and quick skip-the-line entry!

2. Sky Lagoon

The Sky Lagoon in Iceland is a geothermal paradise that blends natural beauty with modern luxury. Nestled along the rugged coastline near Reykjavik, this stunning lagoon offers breathtaking ocean views while you soak in its warm, mineral-rich waters. This is an experience, a journey through the seven-step ritual that takes relaxation to a whole new level. From cold plunges, a steamy sauna with panoramic views, and a serene mist room.

While Hayden and I haven’t been yet, it’s at the top of our must-visit list for our next trip to Iceland. We can’t wait to see if it lives up to its reputation as one of the most magical spots to unwind after a day of adventure in this wild and beautiful country. When we go we will book on GetYourGuide for an easy booking!

3. Vök Baths

The Vök Baths in Iceland are a dreamy escape where nature and relaxation come together in perfect harmony. Located on the serene shores of Lake Urriðavatn, these geothermal floating pools are unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. Designed to blend seamlessly with the lake’s natural beauty, they offer crystal-clear waters, stunning views, and a cozy café where you can sip on teas made from the region’s pure waters.

Hayden and I haven’t made it there yet as we had to choose between Geo Sea and the Vök Baths, but it’s a non-negotiable stop on our next Iceland adventure. Just imagining the peaceful vibe, soaking in the warm pools surrounded by tranquil lake views, feels like the ultimate way to wind down after a day of exploring Iceland’s dramatic landscapes. We will book on GetYourGuide when our time to visit finally comes!

4. Secret Lagoon

We loved the Secret Lagoon because it felt natural. It was an authentic Icelandic hot springs with natural rock walls and a moss and dirt floor. The rich mineral waters were so relaxing! Not to mention the views are beautiful. This was such a relaxing lagoon due to how natural it feels. The water was warm in some areas and hotter in others so you can cool down if needed and there was nature all around. This hot springs has more families and some fun pool toys for the kids to enjoy.

I (Sierra) has been here twice! Once back in 2018 with my family and again in 2023 with Hayden. Both experiences were just as fun. We booked our tickets on GetYourGuide and when we went in late August we were able to book same day tickets.

5. Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon was one of my least favorite hot springs. The water is very murky, it made my hair incredibly firm and crispy for a few days after. It also does not help your skin feel as clean as the other hot springs we visited. It is a fun experience, but one I feel is a bit overrated.

I (Sierra) went in 2018 with my family and when Hayden and I returned to Iceland in 2023 we decided to visit different hot springs as we had heard how packed the Blue Lagoon could be and I did not feel like going back. However, it is still a fun and unique experience! The waters are still relaxing and warm, the mud bath is fun, the architecture is modern, and they serve drinks and food to enjoy. You can book tickets on GetYourGuide if you are interested in going!

6. Guðrúnarlaug Hot Spring

The benefits to this spring is that it is free. However, do not let the photos fool you, this hot springs is right next to a hotel and incredibly small. It is adorable and fun but again very small like 5 people max.

This is one of the hot springs I recommend wearing a swimsuit you do not care about to. There is lots of mud and moss floating around that will get stuck to the suit. There is a little hut that acts as a changing room but there are no showers for before or after! However, we had such a fun and relaxing experience. Since this was all natural you can connect more with nature and enjoy the rejuvenating effects.

Final Thoughts

Hayden and I are so excited to visit Iceland again! Two of our top priorities will be visiting the Sky Lagoon and the Vök Baths.
